Systems and processes

Our integrated management system (IMS) encompasses safety, health, environment and quality. It provides a consistent set of system, corporate and operational procedures and is in use at every operational site.

An IMS steering group regularly reviews and updates the system and has this year been working on a project to make it easier for managers to identify relevant tasks by directing them to specific procedures. Initially developed for the concrete division, this improvement will be rolled out to the rest of the business during 2017.

The steering group has also been reviewing the implications of the 2015 ISO standards (9001 and 140001) and working to get them embedded into the IMS and certified before the deadline of April 2018.

A key tool which supports the IMS is a reporting system called Entropy which we use to record and monitor data and information from energy and water use through to environmental incidents and complaints. We are looking to improve our information and data collection through new software called Intelex, which is being introduced throughout the HeidelbergCement Group. Intelex captures safety conversations, incident and near hit reporting and will enable greater insight into the root cause of incidents and the sharing of lessons learned.

The BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing of Materials (RSM) standard is in place at all our production sites. In 2015, we became the first company in the construction materials sector to achieve the international energy efficiency standard ISO 50001. All our business lines operate comprehensive quality management systems to ensure products are made to the highest standards.

High-performance concrete from three of our central London plants is being used to build the capital’s second tallest skyscraper. When it opens in 2019, the 22 Bishopsgate tower will have 62 storeys and stand 278 metres tall, just 31 metres short of The Shard.
